My own ancestors were French and Canadian heroes (no heroes on the Dutch, Swiss or Prussian lines). But my husband’s line is much more interesting to the study of American history.

First he descends from the Pilgrim John Howland. Howland’s claim to fame is that he was not only the 13th signer of the Mayflower Compact, but he was also the impatient pilgrim who didn’t have the common sense to stay below deck during a storm. He washed overboard and was saved by a stray rope and a couple of strong crewmembers who pulled him back on board. Impatience has not diminished in their DNA.

Then he has not one but three of the Salem witches. Also traits that haven’t diminished in his mother’s DNA. The daughter-in-law of two of them was a psycho who actually showed up nude to church one day to protest being taxed by the church. She ended up getting booted out of the colony.

Benjamin Franklin in his tree twice. But before you think Ben was a positive influence on the family line, it was at this point in the Revolution that the line became Loyalists to the British Empire and fought against the rest of the family. They ended up getting booted out of the US after the Revolution and exiled to Nova Scotia before moving west to Ontario. Longing for what they fought against, they ended up moving back into the US without telling everyone that they’d been traitors.

As a truly biased third party who had many a wonderful chuckle doing that tree, I can honestly say not much has changed. My mother-in-law is as much an impatient twit as John Howland. She’s also as bizarre and dramatic as the Wardwells. Sometimes it’s amazing to see how much a certain personality trait perpetuates in a family over many, many generations.

How do you write a story that flashes between the past and present of the story?

I’ve read a book(called madapple I think) that does something like that.
Example: chapter 1:Past
chapter 2:present
chapter 3:past
chapter 4:present

How do you write it so it wouldn’t confuse the reader too much?How to show when the story is in the past or in the present?

If you’re thinking of switching back and forth between time periods the best way to accomplish this is to do it when it fits the story. Whether or not that is chapter by chapter. You might go through 3 chapters of the present before you need to switch back to the past. Just go with what your story needs, don’t lock yourself into a specific formula.

To show that you have switched to the past, you could write the year at the beginning of the chapters. Font changes are not necessary in this case.

its called keeping your options open. I still talk to my ex, partly because I know he wants me back. The guy I am seeing hates it, so I dont bring it up. But the truth is, even though I would never go back to him, I know that I have that option if it doesnt work out with this current guy. Not proud of it, but there it is

First off, a few simple details: I am sixteen, in high school, and have not had a date since my last girlfriend died two years ago. The experience kind of scared me away from the entire ‘dating’ scene, but now I feel that I am ready to start again. Pro-life people, what is your position on surgical separation of conjoined twins?

In some cases the choice is between whether to let the twins remain conjoined and suffer a debilitating, shortened life, or to attempt to separate them, knowing that often the weaker of the two may die, what do you advocate (assuming the twins are not old enough to have a choice in the matter.)

I have no "position" on the gruelingly painful decisions that some parents are forced to make.

I do give thanks, each and every time I become aware of such a case, that it is not me who has been called upon to decide.

It is just outside of my nature to speculate what I would do, or to fault any other for the decision that circumstance forced them to make.

And, I must say that the fact that you directed this ot "pro life people" suggests that you have an ulterior point to make…………..what a cheap shot………….this is a difficult situation for ANY parent.

My husband and I have been married for going on 2 years, and we have a 2 1/2 month old daughter.He has 3 grown kids (19, 23, & 29) from his previous marriage.We have known each other through our work for almost 5 years, and have been together for almost 3 years.My husband called and asked his ex-wife to come to the hospital the day our daughter was born without asking me, and he tells her all the time that she can come over to our house anytime to see her.He and his ex talk most every day, sometimes 5 or 6 times a day. He often has longer conversations with her on the cell phone than he does with me.He is an over-the-road truck driver, and he is gone from home 4-6 weeks at a time.He often hangs up on me when she beeps in on his cell phone to talk to her.She cheated on him for half of their marriage.She is also re-married.His ex talks bad about me ALL the time, which makes his older kids resent me.They were Divorced before I ever came into the picture.Where should the line be drawn?

I think ex’s are that for a reason, and once the kids are grown there is no reason for that much contact.

My partner and i are condsidering building a second story onto an exsisting house. This is my parents house, and we can’t afford to buy land and build so are considering building onto there house and living on the 2nd story? Any ideas or suggestions?

You will need to get some advice from an Architect. The answer to your question will depend on the local government requirements for your area, the capacity of the existing home to carry the additional loads, the planning feasability, your budget, the impact of the proposal on the adjoining properties, and so on.

Archicentre Limited ( www.archicentre.com.au) which is wholly owned by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects will for a nominal fee, send out an architect to prepare a preliminary design report for that property.

I think it will be money worth spending whatever the outcome, as you will be in a better position by reason of the report, to persue the matter further or make other plans for your future home. Perhaps there is an alternative development opportunity on the site which you have not considered, and an archtiect is in a better position to advise you.

Your idea might be a good one…. and certainly any strategy which reduces urban sprawl and optimises the sharing of resources with family members should be encouraged in principal.
